Carley Hodgkinson is the Chair of the Graphic Design for Marketing program and co-founder of the Big Pictures Lab. She has taught typography, interaction design, marketing communications design and technology ethics courses in the Graphic Design for Marketing program since 2017. Curious about all small things, from cells to pixels, Carley brings her innate love of design, science, and technology into the classroom. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Genetics (U of A), a Bachelor of Design in Communication Design (Emily Carr), and a Master of Design degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art + Design.
Carley Hodgkinson cut her teeth at Adbusters Media Foundation before working as an agency designer at both Kaldor and Signals studios. She then ran her own graphic design and book design business, with cultural clients including Artspeak, the Contemporary Art Gallery, and the Vancouver Public Library Foundation. Carley’s Master of Design work opened new interests in public spaces, experience design, and urban planning, with participation in social practice exhibits in Halifax, Lisbon and Vancouver. Following her MDes, she moved into user experience design, working as a senior visual designer at SAP on business intelligence software and big data collection.
Beginning in 2023, Carley and faculty member Erin Ashenhurst proposed, planned, and produced Big Pictures, a conference on murals, billboards, and urban interventions. Bringing together academics, designers, artists, and curators, Big Pictures Lab investigates the powerful role of visual culture in urban environments.
Carley spends her free time practising yoga, eating snacks, and forest bathing on the North Shore.
