As a white, Canadian-born and raised settler, Heather (she/her), lives, creates, and works on the ancestral First Nations territories of the Stolo, Hul’quminum, Tsleil-Waututh, and Musqueam in Vancouver, B.C. With a BDes in Fashion and Technology from Kwantlen Polytechnic University and an MEd in Home Economics education from the University of British Columbia, Heather is currently pursuing a PhD in Art Education with the University of Victoria to continue her learning journey. Heather is a sewist, an educator, a learner, and a maker, inspired by her maternal grandmother and mother, who both engaged with craft, and by the numerous learners she has worked with since starting as an educator in a faculty role at KPU in the Wilson School of Design in fall 2013. From both a personal and research perspective, Heather is curious and interested in the ways that communities connect and collaborate to support shared learning in areas of craft, textile, and fashion making, learning more about the connections of craft to culture, heritage, and the role this knowledge and skill may hold in education. Since fall 2020, she has been part of the team slowly developing Stitched, a sewing-focused OER (Open Education Resource), with the aim of creating an open-access resource for those learning and building their sewing skills.
