Paola Gavilanez is a seasoned interior design professional and educator with over 24 years of combined experience in Canada and Ecuador. She is a Registered Interior Designer, NCIDQ certified, and LEED AP ID+C accredited. Formally trained in interior architecture and design, Paola also holds a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, with a focus on communications, sustainability, and culture. As Chair of the Interior Design Program, Paola plays a key role in shaping forward-thinking design education. She has led the development of curriculum and accreditation processes that prepare students to thrive in a dynamic and evolving industry. Her commitment to excellence in teaching was recognized with KPU’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 2024.
In practice, Paola has contributed senior-level design expertise to more than 150 projects across commercial, residential, hospitality, and institutional sectors. She remains actively involved in the design community through professional associations such as IDIBC and IDC, and she serves on several academic advisory boards, helping to bridge the gap between education and industry. Paola’s research and published work explore interdisciplinary design practices, collaborative skills development in students, and the use of digital tools like ePortfolios to support professional growth. Her passion lies in fostering the next generation of interior designers through innovative, sustainable, and inclusive approaches to design and education.
