Toby is a Founder and Co-Creative Director at Propellor Studio, a multi-disciplinary art and design studio based in Vancouver. Toby’s work at Propellor spans a range of disciplines from lighting design, furniture design, exhibition design and curating, to the design and creation of sculptural installations. Common threads run through all of Toby’s work: an interest in the forms and systems of the natural world, a passion for creating objects and experiences that express an idiosyncratic beauty through their form and function, and a desire to make work that will last well into the future.
Making lies at the heart of Toby’s practice. For the past 25 years he has honed his skills as a problem solver and craftsman in service of Propellor’s design process with the belief that a deep, hands-on understanding of materials and processes is essential to the creation of resonant and lasting design. Toby holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Emily Carr University as well as a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of Alberta.
