This pro-bono design project started in 2024. Students and faculty from Kwantlen’s Interior Design program worked with recreation and occupational therapists and residents in a co-design process to renovate the lobby and social areas of Banfield Pavilion, a long-term care home in Vancouver.
The project involved improving lighting, creating social areas with a residential feeling, defining seating areas from circulation paths, and designing a display system for residents’ art.
The project was funded by a modest grant to enhance residents’ opportunities for social interaction and connection to community. Given the budget limitations, donations of arm chairs and light fixtures are sought.

This display system for residents’ art was designed to provide an easy-to-update display system that allowed residents to touch the art without knocking it off the wall. The framed art can be slid in from the ends, but will not fall out if tilted forwards.
The current phase of the project involves designing handrail system for the outdoor area to support residents moving around the garden area safely and independently.
