Learning to FIND a visual narrative

Foundations in Design (FIND) students learned how to create a visual narrative through the art of comic making.

FIND Instructor Monique Motut-Firth describes the project,

“These small comic strips were created in a new class, Storytelling in Design, the students were asked to pick a somewhat dramatic moment, incident or experience from their first year as a Foundation student here at the Wilson School of Design to illustrate as a 6 framed comic with the goal of telling a compelling story based off their own experiences.”

“They worked in small groups to develop the narrative in a maximum 6 frame, story arc. The students used themselves as actors, models, artists and directors to complete the 6 frames. The style and mediums were open and mixed media exploration was encouraged.”

“There are themes ranging from relief of a class cancellation due to snow in Snow Day; Procrastination sees our character forgetting about his assignment while enjoying new friendships, the project grows out of proportion as the time passes; The Worst Day, explores all of the hurdles that the students face, such as no coffee and traffic but in, all it could be worse (as the character is about to be struck by a meteor in the last frame). Finding Colour, follows a student as he works to find and develop his inspiration, in the end graduating with success. Finally, My Application Journey, the student works tirelessly on their Fashion Portfolio and is rewarded by being accepted to the Wilson program in the end.”
