Fashion Marketing Alumni Spotlight: Ali Sami

FASHION MARKETING

Meet Ali Sami, Human Resources Manager, as he shares his growth in the industry since starting the Fashion Marketing program at The Wilson School of Design.

The Wilson School of Design has a two-year diploma program that combines both an eye for style and a head for business. In our hands-on program, you’ll learn practical skills in business, fashion, communication and marketing, while making industry connections that will launch your career.

After graduation, you can choose to take your career further by applying to ladder up into one of KPU’s Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree programs or a degree program in another faculty of interest.

The Fashion Marketing program really did change my life.

“My name is Ali Sami, and I took the Fashion Marketing program at the Wilson School of Design. So, I do remember being very interested in what my family and friends were wearing as a kid. From the age of like 10, I would be telling everyone what they needed to wear or kind of getting in the way of them wearing what they really wanted to wear. In high school, I began taking it a lot more seriously in terms of making it a real career. “

“The Wilson School of Design stood out to me because of its ability to turn the two-year program into a degree. And so, the mixture of business classes and fashion programs really was a unique offering. “

”My time in the fashion marketing program really taught me the skill of time management, how to be a people person, how to go into new situations.”

“Through exposure to things like visual merchandising or design or events planning, I was kind of ready for whatever came my way once I started my actual career in retail. “

“So, I started at Nordstrom as a salesperson in 2015. My current role right now, I work as the area HR Manager for Western Canada. And working in HR at Nordstrom, I do play a part in helping people really achieve their goals and so that could look like helping someone towards a career in leadership. And I love that. It’s a really rewarding part of my job.”

” Working at retail is exciting. You get to meet a lot of different characters. It’s different every day. The Fashion Marketing program really did change my life. When I joined the program, I didn’t have a lot of confidence. I was quite sheltered and so going through the two years of the Fashion Marketing program, it really opened up my eyes into what I was able to do.”

” It gave me a lot of confidence and it just showed me that if I had a goal, I can really set that goal and work towards it. The things that I learned and the skills that it gave me really are showing up every day and what I do, so, I’m really thankful for that time.”
